Occupational Hygiene is the science of recognition, evaluation and control of hazards arising in the work environment.

Occupational hazards are all around. They vary from the obvious, such as the physical dangers of working in close proximity to moving equipment. To the less obvious or even insideous long term effects such as those caused by working in dusty environments. The role of the consultant can be the identification of these hazards. The evaluation of the hazards or the production of recommendations for the control or management of the hazards.

Effects of irritating dust

In this situation the problem has manifested itself in the severe rash that is apparent on the worker. Investigation is required to determine the cause of the rash, evaluation of the extent of the problem and recommendations for the management of worker exposure and the reduction of the problem by engineering controls.

During maintanence work in a power plant the work area temperatures
were extremly high, monitoring the heat stress and developing a regime  of work and rest was recommended.
